Dominican Republic to dump Taiwan, embrace China

Beijing.- Dominican Republic on Thursday proposed stronger ties with China to improve investment in manufacturing, agribusiness and services, which would diminish the historical trade deficit between the two countries.

The Caribbean nation’s position was disclosed during the First Ministerial Meeting of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States CELAC-China, and heralds Dominican Republic’s severing of relations with Taiwan.

Deputy Foreign minister Alejandra Liriano presented the proposal in her speech at the CELAC-China meeting in Beijing, and stressed the importance of promoting relations with the Asian nation as a way to spur sustainable and integrated development in the LAC region.
