Dominican Republic to build its 13th airport

San Francisco, Dominican Republic.- The government on Wednesday announced construction of the Northeast Aerodrome, aimed at spurring production, trade, sports and ecotourism in Duarte, Hermanas Mirabal and Juan Sánchez Ramírez provinces, to be built near the La Vega towns Jima Abajo and Ranchito.

Airports Dept. director Marino Collante said his agency will build the facility in collaboration with the Northeast Regional Development Council (CRD) headed by Catholic bishop Jesus Maria de Jesus Moya, senator Amilcar Romero and business leaders Ysòcrates Peña, Abraham Abukarma and Hector Rizek.

Locals sectors have demanded the construction of the regional airport for nearly two decades and is one of president Danilo Medina‘s campaign promises.

In a statement, Collante said the government will start construction as soon as possible, and stressed the continued collaboration of business and other sectors in the Northeast to materialize the project.

The Northeast Aerodrome, together with similar terminals in Constanza, Montecristi, Samaná and Pedernales, adds to the country’s regional leadership in such facilities, in addition to its eight international airports.
