US$13.0M underpass at busy artery to save time, money

Santo Domingo.- Under asearing midday heat and to the drumb beats by demonstrators calling for his reelection,president Danilo Medina on Sunday cut the ribbon for the overpass on 27 deFebrero Av. with La Privda St., built at a cost of around US$13.0 million.

Accompanied by senior officialsand executives of the contractors Odebrecht of Brazil and of Grupo Estrella, Medinaarrived at 11am to inaugurate the underpass which completes the expresscorridor through the National District´s busiest thoroughfare..

Public Works ministerGonzalo Castillo lauded Medina for in his view investing in the construction ofmajor infrastructure projects across the country, and urged him to “speakstrongly” with deeds. “Mr. President, speak loudly, speak strongly in thismanner.”

Each of the 70,000 motoristsexpected to use the underpass daily will save up to 15 minutes on their dailydrive along the major artery, Castillo said, adding that overall savings fortaxpayers will be RD$770,000 daily.

Nearly 200 peoplefrom several political parties and groups that support Medina´s reelectiongathered next to the stage erected for the activity, chanting “Don’t changewhat works well.”
