Dominican Republic applies for membership in Caricom

Georgetown.– Guyanese President Irfaan Ali announced that the Dominican Republic and Martinique have applied for membership in the Caribbean Community (Caricom) during the community’s summit in Georgetown.

“The process for these countries to become associate members has already begun,” Ali said in his closing speech at the summit, which was broadcast on his social media networks.

“The (Caricom) secretariat will work with both Martinique and the Dominican Republic to comply with the procedural aspect of things, so that by the time we reach July (the month of the next regular meeting), the full mechanism will be in place and the recommendations will come,” the Guyanese leader said.

The last time talks were suspended was due to the large-scale deportation of Haitians by the Dominican Republic.

Caricom members are Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Bahamas, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Montserrat, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago.

At this critical time the Dominican would like to join the Carecom, ohh.. this is is suspicious, we as Haitian we want to come out of this so called CARECOM, they are not doing any thing positive in the Caraibeans. Once they keep taking order from the US government, they don’t have any positive action to do anything or to establish equality and justice in our region. I stand for the soverainity of Haiti, destroyed for more than 109 years by the occupation.

It’s a good decision, Dominican Republic had open another door to get into commercial and cultural relationship with nations of Afro descent.

I hope that someday soon this regional association will lead to a central Caribbean banking system, and a full regional Free Trade Zone for Caricom members.

How exactly will this benefit the Dominican Republic? Thus far, Caricom has done virtually nothing to help and advance its member states.. it’s a useless organization.
