Dominican Republic to add nearly 15,000 new hotel rooms

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Republic’s hotel industry is experiencing significant growth, with approximately 14,900 new hotel rooms expected to be added over the next three years. This expansion represents an 18% increase in current capacity and involves investments exceeding US$3 billion.

Leaders of the Dominican Republic Hotel and Tourism Association (Asonahores) attribute this surge to the country’s legal stability and strong investor confidence. The average cost per hotel room is estimated at US$200,000. They also emphasized the superior infrastructure and tourism offerings in areas like Casa de Campo, Cap Cana, and Samaná, including high-end second homes owned by wealthy individuals.

The luxury segment continues to expand, with 1,000 upscale rooms set to open in Miches in 2025. Asonahores also highlighted growing diversification in tourism through sports and health-related travel, with top-tier hotel brands increasingly investing in the country.

Yet absolutely no government investment in Punta Cana. It is the forgotten land from a government point of view, unless it is about collecting revenue. I think the fact that most properties are foreign owned, means few can vote. I am somewhat embarrassed when I have friends come to visit and I show them around. The place smells like a toilet. No sewers or drainage. Sidewalks with 4 foot holes and broken concrete. No lights to speak of for those walking at night. Roads are of a dangerous design and deplorable condition. They become all but invisible at night. Traffic chaos that rivals urban cities 10x larger. The police (Digisett) woefully undereducated in the job they are mandated to do.

No urban planning with houses being built right next to industrial sites. No greenspace or parks. Next to no access to the beaches (the main reason people buy here).

So yeah, let’s build more resorts and forget about everything else.

Personally, I am thinking it is time to divest in this country and move on. Sad to say, as when I came here, despite the issues, the place had some character and pride. Now all it has is lifeless concrete and neglect.

Come on Mr. President…you can do better.

I agree. At least Cancun has invested in their roads and surrounding areas. You drive from airport and their roads are better than US. I just left DR. We had 45 min drive from the Airport, and roads were awful.
The airport is a whole other subject. You can tell they have added a lot more resorts for this tiny airport that cannot begin to handle the crowds. It took us 4 hours to check bags, go through security, immigration (?). It was a nightmare!! We would have missed our flight had it not been running late. Definitely turned our group off to wanting to return to Punta Cana.
You HAVE to invest in your airport, roads and overall infrastructure if you want to keep tourists coming back

thanks for the honest review. I am Dominican and I truly think it is a great place. but sometimes you need to speak the truth and hopefully the government will listen.
