Notorious deputy takes claque to questioning by DA

Santo Domingo.- Dozens of members of the bus owners’ union FENATRANO went Monday carrying posters, beating on drums and blowing trumpets in support of the feared deputy Juan Hubieres, who was subpoenaed for questioning by the Office of the Environment Prosecutor, which charged him with several crimes against the environment.

Chanting “we’re unionists, no criminals,” bus owners and drivers rallied in front of the old Palace of Justice in the Centro de los Heroes (La Feria), alleging persecution against Hubieres, as several police agents guarded the building’s closed doors.

Visitors, journalists and judges had to use the back door.

The notorious leader of one of the country’s biggest associations of bus owners had to face questioning by Environment prosecutor Andres Chalas, on charges he and a group of his organization invaded and devastated lands of a protected area in Santo Domingo East in November.
