Dominican Republic’s Cardinal to help tone down presidential campaign

SANTO DOMINGO.- The political parties agreed to conduct a civil and cordial campaign, after a nearly two hour meeting with Central Electoral Board president (JCE) Roberto Rosario, cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez and monsignor Agripino Núñez.

Rosario said he asked the Catholic Church to "take the words to fact," by coordinating a political agreement between the parties in writing.

For the PRD participated its president Miguel Vargas and its general secretary Orlando Jorge, whereas for the PLD, senior leader Cesar Pina and its general secretary Reinaldo Pared.

The Cardinal said he was pleased to be called for the meeting to deal with the issue because he doesn’t want the boisterous words to derail the civilized campaign.

The announcement comes just hours after the PRD and PRD traded accusations of corruption, including the words liar, hypocrite and inept.
