Dominican government faces a record 602 protests
SANTO DOMINGO.- During its first 90 days president Danilo Medina’s Administration was the target of an unprecedented 602 protests nationwide, the first just 28 days after he took office.
After the dictator Rafael Trujillo’s death the tradition has been a 100-day truce for the new president starting when he takes the oath.
Nonetheless Medina has faced protests especially against the tax reform recently signed into law, which the opposition has rebuked as unnecessary.
In fact the files of the various law enforcement agencies stress the political component behind most of the actions, since few demand social grievances. "The protests for community or social grievances have been minimal."
And though the source quoted by eldia.com.do also notes the peaceful nature of most of them, violent and even fatal clashes have occurred in some?, including the northern the Cibao region and in the campus of the Santo Domingo State University UASD, where one student was killed and several police agents were hurt.
