Opposition party’s months-long rift holds as talks fail again

Santo Domingo.- The months-long rift in Dominican Republic’s biggest opposition party (PRD) hit another flashpoint Thursday when a push for talks to reconcile organization president Miguel Vargas and former president Hipolito Mejia failed again.

In a document disclosed yesterday Mejia rejected Vargas’s proposal to the PRD presidential candidate for the 2016 elections, in exchange for Mejia designating the running mate.

"We’ve discussed your proposal with the party’s various senior partners and from simple reading found a marked divorce from the transparent participatory spirit that has made the PRD our country’s school of democracy. It’s obvious that your proposal ignores the right to elect and be elected, the golden rule of democracy," Mejia said in his letter to Vargas.
