R. Paulino. File.

Santo Domingo.- Defense minister Ruben Paulino on Thurs., confirmed reports that Haitian doctors are referring pregnant women from that nation to give  birth in Dominican hospitals located along the border.

He said Army intelligence found that the number of pregnant Haitian women admitted to hospitals at Jimani and Elias Piña (west) has fallen from 15 to “two or three” per week.

During a meeting with the Chamber of Deputies’ Interior and Police Commission, Paulino affirmed that since the hospitals along the border provinces were intervened, the number of pregnant Haitian women crossing the border seeking medical attention and to give birth has decrease.

“We have detected that Haitian doctors make referrals of Haitian women to give birth in the Dominican Republic,” said the official.

He stressed that the military hasn’t been ordered to prevent pregnant women from receiving medical attention once they are in Dominican hospitals, but prevent their illegal entry into the territory instead.
