Cement industry has grown 55% in Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Association of Portland Cement Producers (ADOCEM) has released its performance report for 2023, highlighting a significant growth in the cement industry. According to the report, cement production has increased by 55% in the last ten years, reaching 6.5 million tons at the end of 2023.

Economist Magín Díaz presented the study “Evolution and impact of the cement industry in construction: myths vs. reality” during the annual lunch event organized by ADOCEM. The study found that the price of cement in the local market remains one of the lowest and most stable in the region, and its evolution is aligned with the evolution of its inputs.

The study also analyzed the weight of cement in total construction costs, comparing data from the Direct Housing Cost Index (ICDV) and a study conducted by the Pedro Henriquez Ureña National University (UNPHU). The results showed that on average, cement prices explain between 10% and 17% of the increase in cost for different types of constructions, with the remaining 83% to 90% attributed to other factors.

ADOCEM President Eng. Giuseppe Maniscalco emphasized that the cement industry has been proactive in responding to the growth momentum in the construction sector, with a consumption of 5.4 million tons in the local market. He highlighted that economic prospects for 2024 support a reactivation of economic growth, which would recover the momentum experienced in recent years.

Maniscalco stressed the importance of having a clear vision of the future and adapting to changes in the economic and social environment. He also noted that the cement industry is a fundamental driver of economic growth, generating 30,000 jobs and contributing to sustainable development.

Executive Director Julissa Báez highlighted the importance of cement in daily life, stating that it is often taken for granted. She emphasized that cement is everywhere and plays a crucial role in infrastructure development, housing, and resilient cities.

The event was attended by members of the ADOCEM Council, state officials, opinion leaders, and actors from the construction sector. Testimonial videos were presented showcasing the positive impact of each cement company on their communities.
