Dominican Republic celebrates National Larimar Day with record exports

Santo Domingo.- On November 22, the Dominican Republic celebrates National Larimar Day, a day dedicated to recognizing the cultural and natural wealth of the nation. In 2024, the country achieved a significant milestone, exporting 55,000 pounds of larimar, a semi-precious stone unique to the Dominican Republic. This export figure, confirmed by the Ministry of Energy and Mines, reflects the growing international demand for this rare stone.

Larimar, a blue and white gem found exclusively in the Sierra de Bahoruco in Barahona, has become a symbol of national identity. Named by Miguel Méndez in 1974 after his daughter and the Caribbean Sea, it was officially designated the national stone by the National Congress in 2011.

National Larimar Day, established by Law No. 17-18 in 2018, aims to raise awareness about the conservation of larimar and promote its distinctive qualities globally. The stone’s aesthetic appeal and exclusivity have made it a key product for the Dominican Republic’s artisanal jewelry industry, contributing to both local employment and economic development in the southern region. The increasing export of larimar further enhances the country’s reputation as a top destination for this unique gemstone.
