US Embassy issues Security Alert for Dominican-Haitian border

Santo Domingo.- Tensions at the border between the Dominican Republic and Haiti have led to closures at all crossing points, prompting the U.S. Embassy to warn citizens traveling to the area. While some U.S. citizens have reportedly crossed into the Dominican Republic from Haiti, conditions at crossings remain volatile and subject to rapid changes.

The four official border crossings are Malpasse-Jimaní, Ouanaminthe-Dajabón, Anse-à-Pitres-Pedernales, and Belladère-Elias Piña. However, the U.S. Embassy in Santo Domingo clarified that it cannot assist citizens in crossing the land border and advises travelers to prepare for delays, additional restrictions, or alternative transportation methods.

The Embassy urges U.S. citizens to stay informed, follow local guidance, and register their travel plans in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for updates and emergency assistance. Travelers are encouraged to explore air or sea transport options to avoid disruptions at the closed land border.

US citizens traveling near the area would have to be extremely naive not to know about the tensions in Haiti and the border. There really is no need for this alert from the US Dept of State. It is just for the agency to have the ability to say, “we told you so”.

In US, these are examples of warnings on products :

  1. “Do not use while sleeping” on a hair dryer,
  2. “Caution: Hot” on a coffee cup,
  3. “May be hot after heating” on a food package,
  4. “Do not hold the wrong end” on a chainsaw,
  5. “Remove child before folding” on a stroller,
  6. “Do not eat” on a non-food item,
  7. “Warning: sharp edges” on a knife
  8. etc….etc….

You would think that it would be obvious that this is not the time to travel to Haiti…..but so are the warnings on some product…
