Intrant performs drug and alcohol tests on public transportation drivers

Santo Domingo – The National Institute of Transit and Land Transportation (Intrant) began drug and alcohol testing of drivers of different public transport routes on Friday.

Intrant ‘s medical and military personnel carried out the operation at the bus stop at kilometer 9 of the Duarte highway, evaluating 40 drivers. According to a press release from the entity, all gave negative results.

Milton Morrison, the executive director of Intrant, announced that these operations would continue to be carried out on a surprise basis to different transport operators as part of a comprehensive effort to reduce traffic accidents and promote safer transport.

During the day, which also included the taking of blood pressure, the senator of the Santiago Rodríguez province and president of the National Confederation of Transport Organizations (Conatra), Antonio Marte, was present at the event and highlighted the importance of this type of operation to guarantee safety on the country’s highways.

“I got a call early this morning that Intrant personnel were present here testing the drivers and I came to see. This is necessary to protect passengers and drivers, and we hope to continue testing motorists and other transport sectors,” Marte said.

Several drivers who were consulted and who took the test valued the day as positive. Although they admitted that they were surprised, they agreed that these measures are essential to improving road safety.

Intrant specifies that this measure seeks to contribute to the design of prevention campaigns against the consumption of drugs and alcohol aimed at companies and transport operators and the development of training and orientation programs.

Agreement

The Instituto Nacional de Tránsito y Transporte Terrestre (Intrant) and the Confederación Nacional de Organizaciones del Transporte (Conatra) recently signed a collaboration agreement. The agreement contemplates the performance of doping and alcohol tests in the different stops, companies, and unions of Conatra and Conatra SAS throughout the national territory, as well as the promotion and execution of defensive driving programs.

Drivers will also be trained in emotional intelligence and soft skills to improve responsible driving.
