DR: 39,164 young people between 25 and 29 years old do not know how to read or write

Santo Domingo—The X National Population and Housing Census 2022 establishes that at least 756,436 people from 6 to more than 100 cannot read or write. According to the data, the population from 6 to more than 100 who practice reading and writing reaches 8,954,157.

The data by age groups establish that some 582,581 people between 15 and more than 100 years of age do not know how to read and write.

The most significant number of people without reading and writing is represented by adults between 60 and 64 years of age, where it is indicated that 51,999 responded that they do not know how to read or write. These are followed by those aged 65 to 69, with 50,703 individuals.

Adults aged 50 to 54 who cannot read and write represent about 49,721 people; those aged 55 to 59, 48,398; those between 45 and 49 will rise by 44,399, and those between 40 and 44 will reach 43,729.

There are 168,203 young people, from 1 to 39, who cannot read or write. The most significant number of these young people are grouped into people between 25 and 29 years old, with 39,164, followed by those between 30 and 34 years old who do not know how to read and write, with a total of 38,454.

People aged 35 to 49 who do not know how to read and write reach 37,277; those between 20 and 24 total about 33,924, and those from 15 to 19 add up to 19,384.

According to statements by the Minister of Education, in January of this year, around half a million Dominicans between the ages of 15 and 54 are illiterate.

These statements were made at the launch of the Permanent Literacy Service (SEPA), which sought to enhance the educational offer of literacy.
