Senate advances Labor Code revisions with business sector input

Santo Domingo.- The Senate Special Commission studying proposed amendments to Law 16-92, the Dominican Republic’s Labor Code, met with business leaders to discuss their perspectives. Commission President Senator Rafael Barón Duluc emphasized the importance of inclusive consultations to create a modernized Labor Code that aligns with the nation’s evolving economic and technological landscape. He noted that finalizing the complete text will extend beyond this year, as the Senate must carefully review the draft before submitting it for plenary discussion.

Business Sector Proposals

Celso Juan Marranzini, President of CONEP, clarified that the business sector is not advocating for the elimination of severance pay but suggests setting a reasonable limit to avoid indefinite terms that could hinder salary improvements. This aligns with the draft law’s acknowledgment of the need to adapt labor policies to technological advancements and contemporary work environments. Representatives from major organizations, including the AIRD, ASONAHORES, and ACOPROVI, also participated, reinforcing the private sector’s commitment to constructive dialogue.

The Commission will reconvene next Wednesday to gather insights from prominent legal and political figures, including former Vice President Rafael Alburquerque, former Constitutional Court President Milton Ray Guevara, and Supreme Court Judge Manuel Ramón Herrera Carbuccia. These consultations aim to ensure a comprehensive and balanced reform that addresses the needs of all stakeholders.
