Drowned in Punta Cana: Body of missing tourist found on Arena Gorda beach

Punta Cana — The Fire Department and Civil Defense reported that it recovered the lifeless body of one of the tourists missing in yesterday’s incident in Playa Arena Gorda, Punta Cana.

The victim has been identified as Jakub Tomasz Pedziach, a Russian national and of unknown age at the moment.

The Director of Management and Risks of the Mayor’s Office of Verón, Bruno Benítez, issued the report in collaboration with Civil Defense personnel.

The deceased joins the list of victims of the incident that, so far, has only been identified: Marcin Teodor Checinski, 47, and Sylwia Aleksandra, 52, of Polish nationality, and Nelzon Nuñes Ribeiro, 67, of Portuguese nationality.

According to reports from the port authorities, the deceased were dragged by the abnormal waves of the Atlantic coastal area.

The Emergency Operations Center (COE) has restricted the coastal perimeter in accordance with the recommendations issued by the Dominican Institute of Meteorology (Indomet).

The hotel stands in solidarity with the affected families

For its part, RIU Hotels & Resorts expressed its solidarity with the families affected by the unfortunate accident where three of our customers unfortunately lost their lives, and another of them is still missing.

According to the entity’s statement, the tragic incident occurred on a beach where the red flag was raised, indicating the presence of strong currents and high waves, which pose a risk to bathers. Despite this warning, several guests entered the water and were swept away by the currents.

Beaches in tourist areas all need to be staffed with full-time, well-trained lifeguards to prevent tragedies like this. I get that there is usually a flag system in place to warn and advice tourists of tide conditions but sometimes that’s not enough.

It’s not the US. Dr will not pay for people to risk their lives. Red flag was out.
