Environment Department acknowledges lack of inspectors to enforce Parrotfish ban

Santo Domingo.- Vice Minister of Coastal and Marine Resources, José Ramón Reyes López, acknowledged the need for more inspectors to control the illegal sale of parrotfish, despite the ban imposed by Decree No. 281-23. The decree, which prohibits the fishing and sale of several herbivorous fish species, aims to protect marine ecosystems, but enforcement remains a challenge. Reyes López emphasized that public awareness is crucial, as continued consumption of parrotfish harms areas like Boca Chica beach.
During a recent operation in Boca Chica last January, authorities shut down several informal vendors, prompting complaints from local officials who argued that many of those affected were low-income parents. While violations have been detected among informal sellers, the vice minister confirmed that no infractions have been found in formal businesses.
In addition to parrotfish, the decree also places a seasonal ban on other marine species, including surgeonfish, angelfish, butterflyfish, and sea cucumbers. Reyes López reiterated the importance of enforcement and public cooperation to protect the country’s coastal and marine resources. His remarks were made during an interview with Diario Libre.
