Abinader formally summons former presidents for talks on Haitian crisis

Santo Domingo.- President Luis Abinader has officially invited the Dominican Republic’s former presidents to a high-level meeting scheduled for Wednesday, May 14 at 1:00 p.m. in the National Palace. The purpose of the gathering is to build a unified national political consensus in response to the deepening crisis in neighboring Haiti.

The invitations, sent by letter, follow Abinader’s public announcement during his April 29 press conference, La Semanal con la Prensa, where he emphasized the need for inclusive and broad dialogue on the Haitian situation. Each letter was personalized to reflect the respect due to each ex-president’s legacy.

It can be reasonably assumed each of the invites will be pleased to take advantage of the forum, to be in the light once more to express conjectural agendas about the crisis. It will be hard to get former leaders off the stage when Abinader bears the cost.
