Labor Minister: 8 of 9 inspected companies violate labor nationalization law

Santo Domingo.- Labor Minister Eddy Olivares announced the issuance of 61 warning reports following a labor inspection conducted at nine companies in San Antonio de Guerra, citing numerous violations of Dominican labor regulations. The inspections uncovered breaches of Regulation 522-06, Resolution 04-07, and multiple provisions of the Labor Code, particularly concerning worker health, safety, and labor rights.

Olivares emphasized that protecting worker safety is a constitutional and legal mandate and reaffirmed the Ministry of Labor’s authority to conduct inspections and enforce compliance. He also introduced Major General Yuri Ruiz Villalona as the new Director of Inspection, noting that similar operations will continue across the country.

The inspection, led by Nicaury de la Cruz, took place on May 8 in the Riosur industrial park. Infractions included violations of the 80-20 national labor rule, minimum wage standards, unpaid overtime, denied vacation rights, and excessive work hours. Some companies employed a majority of foreign workers—mainly Chinese and Haitian nationals—in violation of labor nationalization laws.

De la Cruz reported that upon arrival, some companies sounded alarms, prompting workers to flee toward the perimeter fence. The Ministry is now working to equip inspectors with modern technology to enhance transparency and effectiveness in future inspections.

Companies cited in the operation include Renova Center, Mundo Comercial H&L, Endiam Import, Sonsoles Aceros, Fábrica Hong Fu, Super Mix, Lida Tubos de Acero, Y&Z Plásticos, and Grupo Power Plastic.

This is no real surprise 89% of those inspected are violators. It may be reasonable to surmise a similar result will be found with investigations by the Director around the country. Disregard of laws is a national pastime and enforcement of laws is lazy at best. We all observe the result of these behaviors.

How about inspections in the Textile factories in LaVega that are paying employees only 9000.00 a month and requiring 9 hour work days and mandatory overtime without overtime compensation. My daughter works at one of these and no employee will say anything because they would immediately be fired. Need widespread enforcement.
