Conatra announces nationwide strike over high tolls

Santo Domingo.- The National Confederation of Transportation Organizations (Conatra) has announced a nationwide transportation strike for this Thursday to protest the rising toll costs, particularly the newly implemented toll at kilometer 32 of the Duarte Highway, which they claim threaten the sector’s financial viability.

Conatra president and Senator Antonio Marte made the announcement during a Senate session on Tuesday, warning that transport workers in all 32 provinces will be forced to halt operations due to escalating economic pressures. Marte highlighted that many drivers spend up to 800 pesos daily on fuel alone and face soaring costs for vehicle parts since the pandemic.

He criticized government officials for failing to offer concrete solutions, accusing some of spreading confusion instead. Marte also pointed out that drivers can pay up to 1,200 pesos a day in tolls, and warned that fare increases may become necessary. He urged the public to support their cause, calling attention to what he described as unlawful toll hikes, particularly at kilometer 32, which he claims violate Law 253-12.

The senator emphasized the political support transport workers have provided to elected officials and called for an immediate review of toll policies that affect public road use.

They are talking about “unlawful” toll hikes. Well… how about the unlawful and risky driving behaviors of transport workers expose to the public every day!

The tolls are necessary to fund the transportation infrastructure of the country.
