AIRD backs creation of Illicit Trade Investigation Unit

Santo Domingo.- The Association of Industries of the Dominican Republic (AIRD) has strongly endorsed the creation of the Illicit Trade Investigation Unit, recently announced by the Superior Council of the Public Prosecutor’s Office. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to combat crimes that undermine formal commerce in the country, such as smuggling, counterfeiting, and the sale of adulterated products.
Mario Pujols, AIRD’s executive vice president, emphasized the importance of this move for upholding the rule of law and protecting public health, safety, and national revenue. He praised the Public Prosecutor’s Office for its commitment and the appointment of Deputy Attorney General Isis de la Cruz Duarte to lead the coordination of this new specialized unit. Pujols expressed confidence that the initiative will lead to more investigations and convictions under Law 17-19, which targets illicit trade and product counterfeiting.
