Japanese vehicles dominate Dominican fleet
Santo Domingo.- The General Directorate of Internal Revenue (DGII) revealed that Japanese vehicles dominate the Dominican Republic’s vehicle fleet, accounting for 60.4% of all registered vehicles. This strong preference highlights the popularity of brands like Toyota, Honda, Nissan, and Mitsubishi among Dominican consumers. South Korea holds second place with 14.6%, followed by the United States (11.6%), Europe (6.5%), and China (1.3%). Motorcycles were excluded from the analysis.
According to the DGII’s 2024 “Vehicle Fleet” bulletin, the total number of registered vehicles reached 6,194,052, marking a 6.6% increase—or 384,916 new units—compared to 2023. The data also shows a clear preference for vehicle colors: white (23.7%), gray (22.9%), and blue (12.6%) for cars; and white (28.6%), gray (20.8%), and black (17.4%) for jeeps.
Geographically, the largest concentration of registered vehicles is in the National District (29.4%), followed by Santo Domingo (16.2%) and Santiago de los Caballeros (8.1%).

LOL…then why is every 2nd car I see a Hyundai Sonata or a Kia K5? Are these cars not registered? Or is this based on “new car sales”?
A good benefit about the Japanese dominance is availability of parts, new and used, most anywhere in the country. Street mechanics delight from this godsend.
