President Luis Abinader yesterday called for a major hemispheric climate pact to decisively confront the effects of climate change, warning that this is the most urgent threat facing the region.

In his speech at the Brazil-Caribbean Summit held in that country, he highlighted the urgency of joint action against phenomena such as extreme hurricanes, biodiversity loss, and the proliferation of sargassum, which are seriously affecting the countries of the Greater Caribbean.

“The most urgent threat we face is climate change; we are already feeling its devastating effects strongly in the Greater Caribbean: extreme hurricanes, droughts, floods, and loss of biodiversity,” warned Abinader, who emphasized that nations with the most significant historical responsibility must take a leading role in financing sustainable solutions.

He also said it is time for a major climate pact that balances international support, innovation, and political will. In this regard, he proposed an urgent energy transition, capitalizing on the abundant natural resources of Latin America and the Caribbean.

Furthermore, Abinader proposed strengthening food security through greater regional cooperation, citing his government’s recent National Food Sovereignty Plan, as well as the need to boost intra-Caribbean agricultural trade.

He also addressed the challenges of intraregional connectivity, describing the urgent need to develop maritime and air corridors that reduce physical barriers between Caribbean countries. “The Caribbean remains a fragmented region, with short distances and long journeys.”
Support for the mission in Haiti

The Dominican leader reiterated that the current situation in Haiti represents a direct threat to regional security and strongly supported UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ proposal to transform the Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti (MSS) into a hybrid operation under United Nations control.

He invited all countries present to support the proposal for the good of Haiti and the entire region.
