Roof of building under construction in Santiago collapses

Santiago – The roof of a building under construction, located on Estrella Sadhalá Avenue in the La Gallera sector of this city, partially collapsed today.
In the disaster area, a bottling plant for soft drinks was operational.
The regional director of the Civil Defense, Francisco Arias, said that, according to preliminary information, the collapse occurred in the afternoon while several workers were carrying out wood removal works inside the structure.
After the verification and clearance work, the Civil Defense and Fire Brigade authorities confirmed that no people were trapped or injured.
In the place of the collapsed building, units of the Emergency System 9-1-1 and Public Health were also present, the report adds.
The National Police took control of the perimeter security.
The authorities stated that, according to information received at the site, this building was among the works paralyzed by order of the Ministry of Housing and Buildings (MIVED).
“At a glance, it can be seen that the collapsed structure shows signs of structural weakness, so we recommend that it be demolished as a preventive measure to avoid future tragedies,” said Arias.
The identity of the property’s owner is unknown.
The case was left under the control of the National Police and the Ministry of Housing, who must continue with the corresponding investigation and structural assessment.
