Over 20 aftershocks follow 5.7 earthquake in Eastern Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico
Santo Domingo.- Following the magnitude 5.7 earthquake that struck the eastern Dominican Republic and parts of western Puerto Rico on the night of Monday, June 23, at least 24 aftershocks have been recorded, including a notable 4.2 magnitude tremor early Tuesday morning.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the aftershocks have ranged in strength from 2.9 to 3.8, with multiple occurrences of magnitude 3.7. The 4.2 tremor has been the most powerful aftershock since the initial quake.
The strongest effects of the original earthquake were felt in Punta Cana, Higüey, El Seibo, and neighboring Puerto Rican towns. So far, no significant damage or injuries have been reported, though seismic activity continues to be monitored closely.
Authorities, including the UASD National Seismology Center, are urging the public to remain calm and follow official updates as emergency services stay on alert.
