Oscar de la Renta Award open to Dominicans abroad until August 8
Santo Domingo.- María Alejandra Castillo, director of Specialized Diplomacy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MIREX), shared details about the upcoming edition of the Dominican Emigrant Award Mr. Oscar de la Renta during her appearance on the show Esto No Tiene Nombre. The award, established by presidential decree in 2017 and first held in 2018, is the highest recognition granted by the Dominican State to citizens living abroad who demonstrate exceptional professional achievements and humanitarian commitment.
The award is open to the more than three million Dominicans residing outside the country, regardless of their profession or academic background. From scientists and artists to social workers and athletes, the focus is on individuals who embody Dominican values such as solidarity, perseverance, and humility, while maintaining strong ties to their homeland. Castillo emphasized that the award is apolitical and honors personal merit and community impact, ensuring its continuity across government changes.
Applications are open until August 8, 2025, and nominations can be submitted via the official website www.premioemigrantedominicano.gob.do or through WhatsApp at 829-257-4258. A selection committee and jury of distinguished figures will evaluate nominees. Castillo highlighted inspiring stories like that of Cacilda Luna, a former domestic worker in Washington, D.C., who became a community leader recognized by the U.S. Congress. “What matters most is the human impact, not titles,” Castillo noted.
