Over 1.3 million girls dropped out of school in the Dominican Republic between 2021 and 2023

Santo Domingo.- More than 1.36 million girls and adolescent females aged 10 to 19 left both public and private schools in the Dominican Republic during the 2021–2022 and 2022–2023 academic years, according to data from the Ministry of Education’s Department of Statistics.

The National Statistics Office (ONE) reports that these students faced a range of challenges—cultural pressures, harsh environmental conditions, poverty and limited access to basic services—that ultimately drove them out of the classroom.

Provinces with the highest dropout figures include Santo Domingo (367,990), Santiago (125,243), the National District (124,024), La Vega (50,599), La Altagracia (53,474), Puerto Plata (42,486), Azua (31,955), Barahona (30,472), Duarte (35,072) and San Pedro de Macorís (45,402).

The Education Department’s report does not indicate how many of these girls re‑enrolled in school after one year. Likewise, Education Minister Luis Miguel De Camps García has yet to announce any specific initiatives aimed at curbing the country’s high adolescent dropout rates.

Sad to see. If the people were taken care of financially maybe these girls wouldn’t drop out. 1.3 million out of about 10 million? That’s a big drop. This only shows the importance of the need for economic growth so people and have some money in their pockets so this doesn’t happen. DR is in a great spot right now with all of the foreigners visiting. Some.of that should go those who don’t have for education with a little stipend while leaning. People in general equate money with status that those who dine have are in a desperate situation. That needs to be addressed. A country is only as good as the people who support it. Those at the bottom to the point of being broke are proud but lack the funds.

Educated in Political Science and Law, I can tell you that it is nearly impossible to convince these people of the importance of education, which is essentially free there. It is astonishing how they cannot see the danger of this. Once they quit school, they don’t really do anything except hang around at home creating an even greater strain to the already impoverished family. The latest numbers have EVERYTHING to do with social media and children being told that they don’t need education, and they can make money with all sorts of nonsense. I have seen this firsthand in my profession day after day. In a place like this- where the people are highly impressionable to what the First World media (North America/Europe) tells them, it will ultimately lead to an even worse disaster, including sex work, criminal behavior, and a failed system where foreigners will ultimately take the jobs requiring education and specialized skill. This is the case with Puerto Rico now. There really haven’t been any solutions that seem to have any effect because it is rooted in the attitude of young people.

The real problem with education in DR is that the Haitians are occupying all the schools, leaving Dominican children out of their own school system, This is something this anti-Dominican news outlet wont report on. I think that DominicanToday should be kicked out of DR.

300,000 Dominicans children are unable to register for the 2025-2026 school year because the UN and anti-Dominican non’profits organizations register illegal Haitian students before Dominicans. DR’s traitor president is complicit.

There are no Haitians in these schools. Stop the blatant lies. Because you losers can’t face your government you place blame on the Haitians. Im lazy and can’t work ..it’s the Haitians. My wages are low….its because of the Haitians. I don’t take care of my children….its because of the Haitians. It’s ridiculous. You can walk into any public school here and see it’s 100% Dominican. And those kids are wild and unruly!!! Yep because of the Haitians who are much smarter.

That is not true at all and you know it. Its money. Lack of good jobs for all that want one. I guarantee the rich peoples children are not dropping out. Its the poor. The goverment needs better social programs to support mothers and their children in school. But, they are too busy lining their own pockets.

You are worng, highly incorrect, and not validated facts information educated and what Ramon A. Garcia said is true. Dominican parents has been raising awareness for more that half a decade, thousand upon thousands of dominican parents could not enroll their children into shcool becuase the school was over enrolled and at its limits, with some schools major percentage being of illegal haitian immigrant students that was brought to light by the own school teachers and administrators stating a significant unprepared rise in illegal haitian immigrant students enrolling has left dominican students with out the possiblity to enroll. This was and is in all the news outlets and independent report of alternative news in dominican republic. For one instance illegal haitian immigrants parents destroyed and burn down a school becuase the adminitrators decided to enroll dominican students first to secure puplis for them then enroll the immigrants students. Good luck finding that news brief on here.

Haitians suck up all the money for Dominicans education, healthcare and social services, as well as all the jobs. The Haitian crisis is intended for those reasons.

This is a sad development but it looks like this data coincides with the Covid 19 post Pandemic years of 2021-2023, where even here in the US public school students had suffered the “Covid gap”, a deep drop in academic performance in Reading and Math, as well as a a deep rate of absenteeism. As a NYC public school teacher I have seen 1st hand my Dominican born newly arrived students that historically come with with deep academic delays as products of the DR public school system, are coming to my classroom with severe delays in basic Reading/Writing skills in Spanish, their mother language, as well as delays in Mathematics and Science. I agree 100% that lack of economical security is heavily influencing these young female students to drop out of school, in order to help their low income families. In my opinion there should be a massive Dominican government national campaign to promote mandatory literacy, Math and Science in order to push for greater together with more social security financial assistance to those students so they can remain in school. Lastly, as a great believer in CTE Career Trade Education, DR should implement more Polytechnic Schools where students can graduate with a technical High school diploma that will allow them to get jobs without the need to necessarily go to college for a post secondary education, so they could find a job.

In the middle of 2025, hundreds of Dominican children are being left out of the classrooms due to lack of space, while in numerous schools priority is given to Haitian foreigners, man in irregular conditions. Desperate mothers, fathers standing in lines, and children with broken hopes of being able to study. The right to free and priority education belongs to Dominicans, as established by our Constitution in its article 63. We can not continue to be indifferent while the State closes its eyes and abandon its own people.
