Spain named guest of honor for Dominican Republic International Theater Festival 2025

Santo Domingo.- The Ministry of Culture has announced details for the 12th Dominican Republic International Theater Festival (FITE RD 2025), with Spain as the guest of honor. The festival will honor cultural promoter Freddy Ginebra for his five decades of dedication to national theater and pay tribute to Spain’s Teatro Corsario, known for its acclaimed interpretations of Spanish-language classics.

This year’s edition will feature 15 international and 17 national theater companies, three additional national groups, and a street theater performance. A total of 78 shows are scheduled across major venues in Santo Domingo, Santiago, Puerto Plata, San Cristóbal, Azua, San Juan, Elías Piña, and La Romana, catering to school, family, and adult audiences. Final-year students from the National School of Dramatic Arts will also present works. The program includes seven free artistic training workshops in areas such as dramaturgy, set design, directing, and improvisation, led by prominent artists.

The festival will open on October 19 with Teatro Corsario’s El alcalde de Zalamea at the Palacio de Bellas Artes and close on October 30 with Protocolo del Quebranto by Spain’s Unahoramenos in the National Theater. Under the motto “Theater is for everyone,” the event will also host forums, discussions, and book presentations. Tickets, priced at RD$200, are available at the National Theater box office, with sales for international performances starting October 1.
