Punta Catalina restores operations after clearing sargassum blockage
Santo Domingo.- The Punta Catalina Electric Generation Company (EGEPC) announced that much of the sargassum blocking the plant’s water intake has been cleared, allowing operations to return to normal by tonight.
The cleanup was carried out through a coordinated effort involving the Dominican Navy, company technicians, and a team of specialized divers who worked for hours to restore the system. EGEPC highlighted that these measures aim to secure stable plant operations while reaffirming its commitment to protecting the marine environment and maintaining energy supply.
Earlier this week, Unit No. 1 of the plant went offline but was reconnected the following day. However, the unprecedented influx of sargassum after Storm Erin had kept Punta Catalina from operating at full capacity until now.
