Abinader to denounce Haiti’s “abandonment” at the UN Assembly

Santo Domingo.- President Luis Abinader announced that during his upcoming participation at the UN General Assembly in New York, he will once again denounce what he considers the international community’s abandonment of Haiti, which continues to face a severe crisis. He also confirmed that the issue will be raised in bilateral meetings with other leaders.

His remarks come after Kenyan President William Ruto warned that the mandate of the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) in Haiti, led by Kenya and approved by the UN in 2023, is set to expire in October. Ruto urged the Security Council to ensure a responsible transition, as the mission has yet to secure the necessary funding for full-scale operations.

The MSS, launched in 2024 with about 1,000 members—mostly Kenyans, was tasked with supporting Haitian security forces against gangs that now control about 90% of Port-au-Prince and other regions. According to UN data, Haiti recorded 4,026 homicides in the first half of 2025, a 24% increase from last year, while gang violence has displaced 1.3 million people internally.

His denouncement will fall upon deaf ears. Haiti is at the bottom of the list of trouble spots, if it is on the list, to be addressed by the UN.
