How long will the rains continue and what measures will be taken to avoid unfortunate situations?

The heavy rains reported across the Dominican Republic, caused by an active tropical wave and a low-lying trough, are expected to continue until Saturday, according to the director of the Dominican Institute of Meteorology (Indomet).
Gloria Ceballos also highlighted that, preliminarily, there is a report that “in the southwest (of the country) the accumulated water has exceeded 200 millimeters (mm) in 24 hours,” while in the provinces of Enriquillo, Barahona, and Azua, 146 mm have been recorded.
What to do in case of rain?
For its part, the Emergency Operations Center (COE) shared with the public some measures they can take to avoid unfortunate situations during the rainy season.
- Try to stay in a safe place.
- Avoid throwing items on the street and dispose of trash properly.
- Remove anything that could be blown away from balconies and windows.
- Avoid walking through flooded streets.
- Avoid touching poles, light boxes, or cables.
- Drive slowly with the lights on and seatbelt on.
- Avoid crossing rivers, stream,s and ravines with high volumes of water.
