One dead, one missing, and five survivors leave a migrant journey to Puerto Rico.
San Juan, Puerto Rico — One person died, another is missing, and five others survived a maritime accident this Saturday when, during a suspected migratory trip, the boat they were traveling on capsized in Aguadilla, off the northwest coast of Puerto Rico.
This was confirmed by the Aguadilla Department of Public Safety (DSP) on its Facebook account, which reported that it received a call for help near Survival Beach in the municipality this morning.
According to the Aguadilla DSP, at 7:23 a.m. (11:23 GMT), they responded to a 9-1-1 Emergency System alert regarding a drifting boat with seven people on board.
Upon arriving at the scene, personnel from the Municipal Emergency Management Office, the Municipal Police, the United Rapid Response Forces of the Police, the Border Patrol, and the Coast Guard were able to rescue two people; three made it to land, one woman remains missing, and another person died.
The migrants’ nationalities, the type of boat they were traveling in, and why it turned around are unknown.
Agents from the Maritime Unit continue the search, and the police will provide more details about the incident throughout the day.
The waves on the north coast of Puerto Rico this weekend are expected to exceed 12 feet (4 meters), which is why authorities consider them “dangerous.”
In response, the National Weather Service issued a warning of high waves, strong tidal currents, and coastal erosion for much of the northern region of the island.
