Unified Council of EDEs clarifies replacement of power barge in Azua

Azua, D.R.- The Unified Council of Electricity Distribution Companies (CUED) announced the arrival of a new power generation barge at the Port of Los Negros, Azua, operated by the Turkish company Karpowership. The decision comes amid low generation reserves in the national electricity system due to delays in the operation of new private plants.

To ensure stability, CUED replaced the originally contracted 65 MW barge with a 230 MW unit, reinforcing the country’s electricity supply. The two-year agreement will remain in effect until the expiration of current barge contracts in 2026, providing backup during maintenance or unforeseen outages in the National Interconnected Electric System (SENI).

CUED clarified that the new unit is not an additional barge, but a temporary replacement offering higher capacity within the existing contract. The measure aims to prevent power shortages and guarantee continuous service for consumers and the national economy.
