Following the death of politician Vicente Sánchez Baret, this Saturday was declared a day of official mourning by President Luis Abinader. However, the flags at the Centro de los Héroes fountain are not flying at half-mast, as previously established.
Abinader made the mourning official through Decree 608-25, which establishes in its Article three that the National Flag will fly at half-mast during the designated date, in military precincts and public buildings throughout the national territory.
The flags surrounding the fountain located just in front of the National Congress, where the president and members of Congress paid their respects to former Senator Sánchez Baret, were raised to their full height.
This violates the Executive Branch decree.
As the coffin left the National Congress, the flags on the former fountain of the “Fair of Peace and Brotherhood of the Free World” were not flying at half-mast.
