Culture Ministry opens XII International Theater Festival

Santo Domingo.-The Ministry of Culture inaugurated the XII International Theater Festival of the Dominican Republic 2025 (FITE RD 2025) on Sunday at the Palacio de Bellas Artes, marking the beginning of ten days dedicated to theater across the country. The event, led by Culture Minister Roberto Ángel Salcedo, features Spain as the guest country and honors cultural promoter Freddy Ginebra, founder of Casa de Teatro. The Spanish company Teatro Corsario serves as the festival’s guest of honor.

Under the theme “El teatro somos todos” (“We Are All Theater”), the festival runs from October 19 to 30 in multiple provinces, highlighting the government’s commitment to making culture accessible nationwide. The opening ceremony paid tribute to theater artists who passed away this year and recognized both Ginebra and Teatro Corsario for their contributions to the arts. Vice Minister Amaury Sánchez emphasized that the initiative strengthens cultural decentralization and promotes equal access to the performing arts.

FITE RD 2025 will feature 75 performances across eight provinces, with participation from 15 international companies representing Latin America and Europe, 17 Dominican groups, and four state ensembles, along with artists from the Dominican diaspora in the United States. Tickets are available at the Teatro Nacional for RD$200, a move aimed at democratizing theater attendance. The festival opened with Teatro Corsario’s performance of “El alcalde de Zalamea,” a classic of Spain’s Golden Age.
