Abinader announces US$700 million investment to modernize Dominican airports

Santo Domingo.- President Luis Abinader announced that the Dominican Government will invest approximately US$700 million in the country’s airport infrastructure between the remainder of 2025 and 2026, highlighting that the Cabo Rojo International Airport in Pedernales is scheduled to begin operations by June 2026.

According to Víctor Pichardo, executive director of the Airport Department, the investment plan includes major upgrades across key terminals. In Punta Cana International Airport, funds are being allocated to expand the logistics center and open Terminal B, while the Cibao International Airport will receive US$300 million for a new terminal and a runway extension capable of accommodating wide-body aircraft, enhancing air connectivity with Europe.

Pichardo also announced a US$110 million investment in Las Américas International Airport (AILA) for 2026, with US$70 million designated for the construction of a new terminal. He reaffirmed that the Cabo Rojo project complies with all international environmental regulations and forms part of the government’s broader strategy to modernize national air transport.

“The Dominican Republic’s airport system is being transformed,” Pichardo said, “with the necessary investments to ensure optimal infrastructure, greater connectivity, and improved passenger comfort.”

Well, it could the modernization to the airports is to comply with international standards allowing international traffic into and out of the airports. If the standards are not met the airports could lose the ability to serve the traffic.

it feels like these 2 comments have defined this entire administration, always trying to save face for the world while the people on the ground keep struggling. Modernizing and complying with international standards sounds good on paper, but if it doesn’t translate into real improvements for the citizens living with outdated infrastructure and unreliable power, then its just another PR move.
