Shock in Santiago: Union leader Mario Ureña dies during live tv interview
Sanitago de los Caballeros.- Union leader Mario Ureña, founder of the SO (West Santiago) public transport route, died suddenly on Wednesday while being interviewed on the television program “El Café de Diario55.” The incident, captured on video and now widely circulating on social media, has caused shock and widespread concern.
Ureña was discussing public transportation issues and recent clashes between competing routes when he abruptly collapsed on set. The interviewer and production team reacted immediately as cameramen and technicians rushed to assist him. The program was quickly taken off the air. Early reports suggest a sudden cardiac arrest, although an official medical confirmation is still pending.
Ureña was considered a key figure in Santiago’s urban transport sector. As founder of the SO route—recently involved in disputes and confrontations with rival routes—he had been a strong defender of his drivers and an active participant in efforts to ease tensions. His unexpected death prompted immediate reactions from transport leaders, who expressed shock and emphasized his ongoing role in dialogue and mediation.
Members of the SO route gathered outside the TV station to mourn, while the Diario 55 production team expressed deep regret, noting the emotional impact of witnessing such an emergency live. Authorities are expected to release official details on the cause of death.
