Power outages in Las Terrenas and Samaná
Las Terrenas, DR- Luz y Fuerza, the local energy company, has attributed recent power outages affecting Las Terrenas and Samaná to limitations in the transmission line connecting the local distribution network with the National Interconnected System.
The company clarified that it does not initiate service cuts and ensures that any necessary maintenance that requires power interruption is scheduled and communicated to the community. They also notify residents in case of accidents affecting local power lines.
According to Luz y Fuerza, the shift from a local generation system to dependence on the national grid was mandated by electricity sector authorities to eliminate blackouts in Las Terrenas. However, recent outages have been traced to security system issues at the Las Terrenas Substation.
Efforts are underway in collaboration with maintenance companies to address these technical issues. The company highlighted that increasing energy demand in Las Terrenas triggered the activation of the substation’s security system.
To meet growing demand and ensure reliable supply, Luz y Fuerza emphasized the need for a new transmission line from El Catey to Samaná, passing through Las Terrenas. They are actively engaging with government agencies to implement this solution.
