The Butterfly Effect takes Cabarete by storm

Cabarete, Dominican Republic.- The 9th annual Butterfly Effect Cabarete landed in Cabarete on July 8th, 2017. This year’s event registered 80 waterwomen from all over the world. Local and visiting women gathered in Cabarete to complete either a 2km downriver paddle course from Islabon to La Boca or a 5km advanced downwind ride from La Boca to Cabarete Bay.

The waterwomen of Cabarete united their individual athletic abilities to celebrate their accomplishments as a united group. Over the course of the event many other girls and women were inspired to get out on the ocean and try some of the sports for the first time. The event included a beach cleanup, group hula and yoga, as well as food and gear from local sponsors. The event culminated in a celebration and fundraiser for The DREAM Project that was held at the beautiful Velero Beach Resort.

The beach cleanup resulted in 40 bags of garbage being picked up off the beach in Cabarete proving that this event is positively impacting our small surf community and preserving our natural playground. This environmental focus included, the participants, children from the DREAM Project, and members of the community.

“DREAM is especially honored to be part of this great community and global effort to empower women through sport. Many of DREAM’s programs are centered around leveling the playing field for girls and young women in school and life. We believe that the Butterfly Effect is a perfect reflection of those efforts.” Jonathan Wunderlich, Director of Development for DREAM project.

The Dominican Republic Education And Mentoring (DREAM) Project is a US 501c3 nonprofit organization that provides quality education for all children born into poverty in rural areas and small communities of the Dominican Republic.

“There is such a powerful presence of waterwomen here in Cabarete from all over the world and I have had the pleasure of watching this event grow over the last nine years. The Cabarete community is motivated and united when it comes to supporting events and raising funds for local charities. There is a special energy here and Cabarete is one of my favorite destinations. I am already looking forward to 2017,” Tatiana Howard, founder, The Butterfly Effect.
