San Pedro de Macorís, DR.- President Luis Abinader and Minister of Tourism David Collado inaugurated the newly renovated Malecón of San Pedro de Macorís on Saturday, a transformative project with a total investment exceeding RD$290 million.
The extensive renovation covers 1.84 kilometers of the coastal strip, converting it into a vibrant linear park that spans 60,000 square meters, including 12,000 square meters of modern sidewalks. The Malecón now boasts two expansive recreation zones, a business area with nine dual-purpose vendor modules, restrooms, a security post for Politur, and fully equipped communal spaces.
A centerpiece of the project is a secondary plaza featuring a photo spot adorned with iconic “Guloyas” figures, a cultural hallmark of the region and a UNESCO-recognized Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
President Abinader emphasized the significance of the renovation, fulfilling a longstanding demand from the local community. He highlighted the government’s vision for the development of San Pedro de Macorís, a province with immense tourism potential.
“This project represents our commitment to improving quality of life and fostering economic growth in San Pedro de Macorís,” Abinader stated. Tourism Minister David Collado echoed this sentiment, describing the project as a turning point for the city.
“This renovated Malecón will redefine San Pedro de Macorís, enhancing its image and providing a direct boost to tourism in the area,” Collado said during the inauguration.
The upgraded Malecón now features lush landscaping along the coastline, a central islet, and a marine-front zone. Amenities include a children’s playground, an outdoor gym, a universal access ramp, enhanced lighting, and additional facilities designed to promote inclusivity and recreation.
