Reconstruction underway in Santo Domingo’s Colonial City

Santo Domingo.- Tourism Minister David Collado launched the reconstruction of Eugenio María de Hostos, Colón, and Callejón Regina streets in Santo Domingo’s Colonial City. The project, costing over RD$61 million, will cover 7.11 km², including improvements to sidewalks, curbs, lighting, landscaping, drainage, and road paving.

The intervention, managed by the Tourism Zone Infrastructure Executive Committee, is part of a broader RD$90 million tourism development initiative funded by the Ministry of Tourism and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

Collado highlighted that 8% of tourists visiting the Dominican Republic explore the Colonial City, boosting local commerce and tourism. The renovation includes 190 meters of Colón Street, 187 meters of Hostos Street, and 143 meters of Callejón Regina. Upgrades will enhance accessibility, improve pedestrian and vehicular infrastructure, and add new lighting, planters, and public seating.

Additionally, Collado announced the relaunch of “Turizoneando,” a popular tourism promotion program set to run on weekends until June. These efforts align with ongoing investments in the Colonial City, which have exceeded RD$400 million, reinforcing its status as a major historical and cultural attraction.

A tourism powerhouse in the making

With over $90 million USD invested since 2022 through MITUR and IDB partnerships, the Colonial City’s makeover cements its status as a tourism linchpin. Officials anticipate the upgrades will extend visitor stays, driving revenue for hotels, restaurants, and shops. As machinery hums near centuries-old landmarks, Santo Domingo bets on a future where heritage and modernity coexist—one cobblestone at a time.
