Dominican Republic gains popularity among Colombian travelers

Santo Domingo.- Colombian travelers are shifting their preferences away from Mexico, favoring destinations like Punta Cana, Santo Domingo, and Curaçao, according to a Kayak data analysis. Searches for the Dominican Republic have surged by 111%, while those for Mexico have dropped 37%, reflecting a change in travel trends.

Kayak reports that November (111%), September (58%), and October (35%) show the highest increases in flight searches to the Dominican Republic for 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. The average price for flights to the country has slightly decreased from $1,427,937 to $1,416,353. In contrast, Mexico has seen declining interest, with fewer searches in August (-54%), February (-49%), March (-44%), and January (-39%), despite a 45% rise in September.

The shift comes amid reports of poor treatment of Colombians upon arrival in Mexico, contributing to a 17% drop in Colombian tourist departures to the country between January and November, according to Paula Cortés, president of Anato. Mexico’s share of Colombian outbound travel has also fallen from 17% to 13%, solidifying the Dominican Republic’s growing appeal as a preferred Caribbean destination.
