Dominican Republic targets Portuguese market as premier summer destination

Portugal.- The Dominican Republic is making a strong push into Portugal’s tourism market, positioning itself as a top summer destination. Through the Ministry of Tourism (Mitur) and under the campaign slogan “Taste Paradise,” the country showcased its rich natural beauty, culture, gastronomy, and high-end hotel offerings at two major tourism events held in Lisbon and Porto.

This initiative reflects the Dominican Republic’s strategy to diversify its tourism markets, with Portugal selected as a key focus for the summer season. Tour operators responded positively, showing growing interest in promoting the Caribbean nation beyond its well-known sun and beach appeal.

Top resorts such as Casa de Campo Resort & Villas, Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana, and Hodelpa Hotels presented their luxury accommodations, while destinations like Punta Cana, Samaná, Santo Domingo, and La Romana were highlighted as must-visit vacation spots. A Ministry spokesperson emphasized the country’s goal of offering Portuguese travelers everything from romantic escapes to family-friendly adventures, aiming to make the Dominican Republic a preferred destination in Portugal.

Portugal already has beaches of its own and has much to offer culturally to its citizens, so I think this might be a tough market to sway. I think its much easier to go after tourist markets like Russia, Canada, or Northern Europe considering these countries have brutally cold temperatures for much of the year and their citizens need somewhere tropical to escape to during winter.
