Juan Dolio seeks greater government support to boost tourism and investment

Juan Dolio, DR.- Despite its steady hotel occupancy and strategic coastal location, the beach town of Juan Dolio needs stronger government-backed promotional efforts to fully unlock its potential as a tourism and investment destination. This call to action comes from Francisco Bonilla, Executive Director of the Juan Dolio Hotel Association, in statements reported by Infotur Dominicano.
According to Bonilla, industries like film and professional baseball have been essential in maintaining high occupancy rates in hotels throughout Juan Dolio and neighboring Guayacanes. Productions at Pinewood Dominican Republic Studios, Lantica Studios, and Lone Coconut contribute between 80% and 85% of room bookings during filming seasons. In addition, players and staff from nearby baseball academies continue to drive demand throughout the year.
The area currently offers between 2,000 and 2,500 rooms across hotels such as Coral Costa Caribe Beach & Casino, Hodelpa Garden Suites, Emotions Beach Resort, Playa Esmeralda, Los Albatros Residence, and Talanquera Beach Resort. International travelers—especially from Canada and Europe—alongside a robust base of local tourists, regularly enjoy the town’s beaches, food, short-term rentals, and local artisan shops.
Bonilla highlighted that tourism in the area is becoming more community-integrated, with better service, fairer pricing, and a growing environmental conscience. However, he stressed that this progress is not enough without further investment in hotel infrastructure and a focused promotional campaign from the Ministry of Tourism.
“The community is ready, the product is solid, but the destination lacks visibility,” Bonilla implied. Increased promotion, he argued, would attract more international tourists and investors, boosting employment and driving local economic growth.
Juan Dolio’s combination of natural beauty, strong service culture, and proximity to major airports makes it a valuable yet underleveraged destination. As Bonilla told Infotur Dominicano, more support is needed to ensure this coastal hub becomes a flagship of sustainable tourism and investment in the Dominican Republic.
One would think Juan Dolio is able to self-support promotional efforts to unlock its potential. The hotels are not poor. They have the resources to back a promotion campaign. They want government to do it for them. Government worships tourism. Think we know ahead what the result of Juan Dolios solicitation.
There are many rural and poor communities wanting government backing for community needs when they are hard-pressed to provide for themselves. Government is disinterested in them if they do not possess a cash cow. It seems like there are no Robin Hood’s for these disadvantaged folks.
