Tourism Minister breaks ground on Teco beach access road reconstruction

Maimón, Puerto Plata, DR.- Tourism Minister David Collado on Monday inaugurated the reconstruction of the 3.2‑kilometer access road to Playa Teco in the Maimón district, marking the start of a project valued at more than RD$ 117 million. The upgrade will widen the route to eight meters, refurbish the roadway foundation with a pedraplén base and soil‑cement stabilization, and fully rehabilitate the roadbed.

Beyond the main carriageway, the scope of work includes installing four kilometers of roadside ditches, overhauling the storm‑drain system, rebuilding existing culvert heads, clearing and lining ravines, and adding comprehensive horizontal and vertical signage. The Comité Ejecutor de Infraestructuras de Zonas Turísticas (CEIZTUR) will oversee construction, building on its track record of seven completed projects in Puerto Plata, six currently underway, and three in design, totaling 16 works with an investment of RD$ 1.724 billion.

“Today we launch an initiative that bridges sustainable tourism with tangible community benefits,” Collado said. “This renovated route will not only bolster visitor numbers at Playa Teco but will also elevate daily life for local residents.”

The road, locally known as El Guzmancito, has long suffered from severe deterioration, impeding travel for nationals, foreign tourists and businesses reliant on beach‑driven commerce. With reconstruction, hotels, tour operators and merchants anticipate increased foot traffic and revenue, while residents expect smoother access to markets, schools and health facilities.

At the ceremony, provincial and municipal officials joined tourism entrepreneurs and community leaders to underscore the project’s social impact. “Improving our infrastructure is central to positioning Puerto Plata as a premier Caribbean destination,” said María Fernández, a local business owner.
