Puerto Plata, DR.- A potential crisis in Puerto Plata’s vital tourism sector has been diffused, as both tour guides and residents protesting the local cable car (Teleférico) have called off planned strikes and demonstrations. The resolution comes after separate meetings and agreements reached with the Minister of Tourism, David Collado.

The averted actions threatened to disrupt the flow of visitors to the popular northern coastal city. Tour guides, who had announced a strike for Monday, July 22nd, seeking better working conditions and fairer treatment, have reached a preliminary agreement with the Ministry of Tourism. Details of the agreement have not been fully disclosed, but the guides’ association confirmed that their demands are being addressed, leading to the suspension of the industrial action.

Simultaneously, protests surrounding the Puerto Plata Cable Car, a major tourist attraction, have also been halted. Residents and local groups had voiced concerns regarding the management and operation of the iconic cable car. Following discussions with Minister Collado, an understanding has been reached, prompting the cessation of any planned demonstrations. This development ensures uninterrupted access to one of Puerto Plata’s most cherished landmarks.

The rapid intervention by Minister Collado and the willingness of all parties to engage in dialogue have been praised for preventing significant disruption to Puerto Plata’s tourism sector, a cornerstone of the local economy. The agreements signal a commitment from the Ministry to address the concerns of key stakeholders and maintain stability in the sector. Further details on the long-term solutions stemming from these agreements are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
