Public hearing set for environmental review of Punta Bergantín’s first hotels

Puerto Plata.- The developers of the Punta Bergantín tourism project in Puerto Plata have scheduled a public hearing for Tuesday, July 29 at 11:00 a.m. at Villa Montellano City Hall. The purpose of the meeting is to present and gather input on the environmental impact assessments for the first four hotels planned under the project: Jardines del Ámbar, Vista del Atlántico, Valle Esmeralda, and Costa Dorada.

While the Ministry of the Environment has already granted an environmental license for the broader Punta Bergantín project—which spans 9.6 million square meters—construction will begin in August. However, the license explicitly prohibits development in sensitive ecological areas such as wetlands, mangroves, and dunes.

The approved master plan includes nine hotels, residential areas, a hospital, a film studio, a golf course, and several recreational clubs and parks. Notably, the golf course design is being led by Beau Welling Design and Davis Love III. Major hotel brands are involved, including Hyatt (through the Martinón Group), Meliá (in partnership with the Puntacana Group), and Westin (through the Velutini and Humano groups). The project also features a planned theme park, to be developed with operator ITM.

Good point! There are frequent shortages of water delivered in Puerto Plata, so any additional demands need careful planning and water sources.

No more golf courses, they are so destructive to the environment. We have so many already!
