Santo Domingo.- Between January 1 and August 9, more than 2.9 million U.S. tourists visited the Dominican Republic, with nearly 60% coming from just five states: New York, Florida, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts. According to the Ministry of Tourism, Dominican airports registered 2,967,323 U.S. visitors in that period, 74% of them foreigners and 26% Dominicans.
New York led the list with 684,135 arrivals, reflecting its status as home to the largest Dominican community abroad, with over 848,000 residents of Dominican origin in 2024. Florida followed with 400,664 tourists, while New Jersey contributed 315,650. Pennsylvania and Massachusetts closed the top five with 189,431 and 164,883 visitors, respectively. These states also align with the largest concentrations of Dominican-Americans in the U.S.
The remaining 1.2 million travelers came from other U.S. states. The departure patterns remain consistent with last year, when more than 4.5 million American tourists arrived in the Dominican Republic, confirming the country’s strong ties with the U.S. diaspora and its role as the island’s main tourism market.
They categorize the Dominican diaspora as tourist…these are folks who were born and many raised in the DR with long family ties, far from being tourist…lol
They are considered tourists because they no longer live on the island permanently and they travel there and spend money and contribute to the local economy just like foreign visitors.
