Abinader: “The Amber Highway is essential for developing Punta Bergantín.”
The Dominican Government has approximately 8.5 billion pesos to begin construction of the Amber Highway, a 32.7-kilometer road that will facilitate traffic between the provinces of Puerto Plata and Santiago.
This was announced by President Luis Abinader upon attending the groundbreaking of the Melía Bergantín Beach Hotel in Puerto Plata, where he described the highway as a “fundamental” infrastructure for the development of Punta Bergantín and the entire region.
He emphasized that the bidding process, led by the RD-Vial Trust, will be announced “in the next three weeks.”
“The Amber Highway will not only unify and practically create a metropolitan area between Santiago, Moca, and Puerto Plata, but for hotel tourism in Puerto Plata, it will also have two airports: Santiago and Puerto Plata,” the president emphasized.
Following the president’s announcement, this would be the second time the project would be put out to tender. The first call, issued just over a year ago and proposed as a public-private partnership (PPP), was void due to a lack of bidders.
It’s recalled that seven weeks ago, in LA Semanal with the Press, Abinader indicated that the financial aspect of the road initiative had to be redesigned before launching a new call for proposals.
He also recalled the completion, more than a year ago, of the Jamao Highway, which connects the municipalities of Moca and Sabaneta de Yásica and facilitates traffic from Moca and La Vega to Cabarete, where significant real estate development is underway.
